No Ducks Here

Via
Atrios, an appalling confession from Dick Meyer, the editorial director of CBSNews.com.

This is a story I should have written 12 years ago when the "Contract with America" Republicans captured the House in 1994. I apologize.

Really, it's just a simple thesis: The men who ran the Republican Party in the House of Representatives for the past 12 years were a group of weirdos. Together, they comprised one of the oddest legislative power cliques in our history. And for 12 years, the media didn't call a duck a duck, because that's not something we're supposed to do.

Um, why not? What the hell were you supposed to do? Practice your putting? Go to A-list parties?

He focuses on character instead of policy — “I'm not talking about the policies of the Contract for America crowd…” — and he shouldn't. Yes, one drives the other, but it’s the latter we’re going to be paying for for generations — not serial adulteries. Barely restrained — or at least slowed — during Clinton, for the past nearly six years these “characters” been running what my friend Bruce Garret once called “a smash and grab operation.” And, of course, there’s the ultimate in manliness, the war. “Character,” indeed: one part Willie Sutton, one part Caesar.

He gives the Senate a pass on wierdoness; hard to say why. He doesn’t think that a man who makes a complex “diagnosis” via a carefully edited, one-hour video tape is a bit odd? And don’t get me started on the man-on-dog, let’s-bring-dead-baby-home guy. And these men held the top two leadership positions in the Senate. There are others — fewer than the House, to be sure, but then the Senate only has 100 candidates.

Tell you what, Dick. Let’s change jobs. I haven’t worked in publishing in years (and then technical, not news), but I certainly couldn’t do worse. At least I wouldn’t bury or kill stories by journalists who did call a duck a duck.

Time to Stop

Will Rogers was once asked whether he belonged to an organized political party. “No,” he replied. “I’m a Democrat.” The more things change…

Enough already. It’s official. Pelosi’s the Speaker of the House and Hoyer is Majority Leader. Now start leading, planning an agenda, plotting strategy, and not allow that 100-hour promise to become empty words. That’s what most Americans will care about, not who’s Number 2 in the leadership and who likes who more than whom.

As for the Dean vs. Rahm flap, let’s stop it. No Democrat lost. There are majorities in both houses. Rahm’s people cite 14 races in which Democrats lost by razor thin margins; if only Dean had done things Rahm’s way, we would have a 40-member edge. Bosh.

What’s disingenuous about that is that it’s completely unprovable. Some Democrats won by very small margins, too. Dean could argue, equally well, that without the 50-state effort and its energizing effects in states that have been traditionally ignored, those Democrats would have gone down. Prove me wrong.

During each screw up, we’ve made great sport of the Republicans’ claim to be “the grown ups in charge.” Let’s please get over this and be the grown ups in charge.

E Day

In a few hours, it’ll be all over but the screaming (and spinning, and blaming….). I don’t normally get into polls and such: too many numbers, too many shifts back and forth, and I just don’t have that kind of mind. But this from Larry Sabato is interesting. Some people who people love to love don’t look like they’re going to make it. (Sorry, Fixer.) Some people who people love to hate are going down. (Personally, I intend to have a fresh, cold drink and a pack of Camels at the ready when Ohio’s Blackwell and Florida’s Harris give their concession speeches.) But all in all, things look good.

In my 55 years — which dates me from the McCarthy era — I’ve never seen such campaigns. Many haven’t been campaigns at all, they’ve been jihads. (Osama bin Campaignin’? Ouch.) When Democrats actually stand up and/or hit back, the screams set off seismographs. The Outright Lie Quotient (OLQ) is off the charts. Somewhere, earlier today, I read of a candidate receiving death threats. (Sorry, I didn’t save the link.) By contrast, the Swift Boaters’ tactics look like something out of Miss Manners.

Despite my modest hopefulness (when was the last time that happened?), my dour side is never far away. First, between November and January, expect an orgy of looting unmatched since the fall of Rome. The jig is up, and the banditti know it.

Second, depending on how resentful Lieberman is about being dissed, he could switch parties and give control of the Senate back to the Republicans. If Sabato’s 51-49 prediction is true, then it becomes 50-50 with Cheney as the tie-breaker.

Third, the Petulant Child will go into overdrive. But you knew that.

Have fun, folks. Assuming the best, celebrate tonight and maybe tomorrow. But it ain’t over yet.
